Iron Mike Still Refreshes

Iron Mike Circa Eary 1900s

Iron Mike
One of the more unique historical landmarks in Oregon is Iron Mike, one of the last cast iron drinking fountains in Illinois. Since 1896, Iron Mike has graced the northeast corner of the Ogle County Courthouse square.

Installed in the horse and buggy days, Mike was presented by the Humane Society in cooperation with the city of Oregon. It stands about four feet tall and measures about three feet at its widest point. It derives its popular nickname from its heavy metal construction.

The fountain was produced with a horse trough that faces the street and a dish at the base that services dogs. Then about a foot above the horse trough, on the courthouse side, there is a standard drinking fountain.

Although its days as a watering hole for thirsty horses are long past, it remains a good place for people to stop for a drink on a warm summer's day.
