Byron Forest Preserve
Byron Forest Preserve The mission of the Byron Forest Preserve District is to provide for preservation of open space and natural resources, education concerning the natural environment and heritage, and provide recreational opportunities and golf course operations that are consistent with the preservation and education missions.

The District offers everything from nature education to a beautiful spot for a wedding, a business seminar to a round of golf.

The District was formed in 1981 to preserve a small prairie remnant and to reestablish the plant and wildlife that once flourished at the site. The preserve has grown and developed over the last decade and a half to include more than 700 acres at four sites; a nature center with a natural history museum (Jarrett Prairie Center), an observatory (J. Weiskopf Observatory), and an 18-hole golf course (PrairieView Golf Course). The main site, which includes the golf course as well as 450 acres of prairie, savanna, and woods, is scenically situated on the rolling hills overlooking the Rock River.

Hiking Trails
More than six miles of trails are offered at the District. Six hiking trails winding through the prairie, oak savannas, and maple woods, offering a gorgeous view during any season. The quarter-mile Round About Trail, just outside the Jarrett Prairie Center, is paved for the physically challenged. Signs identify the native wildflowers and grasses that line this trail. Cross-country skiers may use the trials during the winter.

J Weiskopf Observatory
The J. Weiskopf Observatory, appropriately located on the third highest point in Ogle County, is open for public sky viewing on every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at dusk, weather permitting. Rockford physician, Dr. Jerome Weiskopf, donated the dome and 11-inch reflecting telescope. The Observatory, which opened in 1993, is available for special programs, tours, and as well as birthday parties.
